Community Bike Shop - Education & Restoration Specialist

Position Summary
The Street Collective's community bike shop seeks a qualified and enthusiastic Education and Restoration Specialist (EduResto). This person plays a key role in working with volunteers and customers, repairing bicycles for sale or donation, and providing excellent customer service. Ideal EduResto candidates will have a deep knowledge of bicycle mechanics and standards, a passion for helping particularly marginalized and underrepresented populations, and a desire to grow the cycling community. Experience teaching or the desire to teach others the basics of bicycle repair is necessary.
1. Help oversee shop activities and volunteer development (40%)

Educate members, volunteers, and customers on correct processes for bicycle repair

Train, motivate, and supervise volunteers
-
Help maintain a positive shop atmosphere with a focus on safety and education

Make sure hours are recorded correctly for volunteers
-
Participate in staff and shop meetings

2. Sales and bike shop activities (20%)

Interact with customers to determine specific needs and present possible solutions
-
Help customers find and install parts
-
Closing and opening storefront procedures
-
Actively maintain order and organization in the shop
-
Cash register daily counting and accounting

3. Recondition/overhaul bicycles of all types and conditions for resale or giveaway (30%)

Evaluate, process and repair donation bicycles
-
Oversee customer installation of accessories, racks, lights, tires, etc.

Ensure a clean and organized work environment
-
Maintain an active inventory of refurbished bicycles and donated items

4. Participate in community events and other marketing and volunteer efforts (10%)

Represent the Des Moines Bicycle Collective in community outreach events
-
Other duties as assigned
